Former Head of WIPO: Kamil Idris



Kamil Idris is a native of Sudan who has studied extensively internationally. As a student of the law, politics, economics, and public relations, Kamil Idris was the perfect candidate to head an international organization devoted to the development of nations while adhering to the law. For a time, Kamil Idris worked as the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

While Kamil Idris is no longer the Director General of WIPO, his work with the organization had a profound effect on him. Kamil Idris believes intellectual property plays a strategically important role in the development and stability of both developed and developing nations. In 2003, he published a masterpiece “Intellectual Property – A Power Tool for Economic Growth,” to demonstrate and illustrate the importance intellectual property has in today’s globalized economy.

Kamil Idris continues to play an important role in the international community. He supports the intellectual rights of states and hopes to improve the understand and respect for intellectual property worldwide. Once intellectual property is protected and respected, creative minds can confidently and freely expand in the knowledge that their patents, designs, and trademarks will be respected internationally. 

Kamil Idris supports the protection of intellectual property and supports the rule of international law. He studied international law at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, University of Geneva. In addition to his PhD, Kamil Idris completed a number of academic certifications related to international economics, international law of development, and international law of financing and banking systems. Kamil Idris also supports the role of economic development as a tool for peace.
